Allen summary- In The Inspired Writer vs. the Real Writer, Sarah Allen says that its normal to not be good at writing and it isn't something you should worry about. Even Sarah who is an English teacher says that she herself is not a good writer. She also tells us to listen to ourselves and not other people when we are writing papers.
Allen response- As students we think that every person who teaches English is a professional and that they love to write and they don't make mistakes. We are afraid to tell a teacher that we don't like writing or aren't very good at it. I agree with what she says about how we need to just trust our writing and not listen to what people like our mom or coach have to say.
Experiences- My experiences compare because I have had to go get help and advice from my family, teachers, and friends many times in my life.
Murray Summary- In his article, All Writing is Autobiography, Murray wants us to think about writing in a more personal way.
GRR- Growing up I was always taught to not be to personal when it comes to your writing. My teachers said that you want to be as non personal as possible and to keep your opinion out of it. My roommates also agree with what I just stated above.
QD 1- The construct that he is trying to get us to reconsider is that we should make more writing more personal even though most will argue that we shouldn't. We need to reconsider where we get our ideas from.
3- Murray's writing is different because he believes that you should get more ideas from yourself and he writes more about personal things. He also uses a lot of first person words such as "I" and "myself" which a lot of the others didn't do. He uses these to prove his point that it should be more personal.
4- I think this also belongs to the genre of a "scholarly article" because he uses some other authors information and he cites them in his work and gives examples.
5- I think he is write and he changes the way I think about writing because I would make it a lot more personal and it would be easier to write. This would help me write a lot more and my work would be better I think.
MM- Two ways that Murray can have a positive impact on me as a writer are that I will write more about my own personal experiences and also I will be able to incorporate more things that I want to talk about in my writing.
GRR-
1) Wood scraps and cardboard made a great treehouse for my sister and her friends to play in.
2) My sister's treehouse which was made of wood scraps and cardboard, it was a great place for her to play with her friends.
3) My sister and her friends loved playing in her treehouse; it was made of wood scraps and cardboard.
My friends don't think that grammar rules are bendable at all.
QD 2- Handbooks get wrong three things (on page 141)
1) "Handbook rules provide no instruction for the use of the comma in the following"
2) "Handbooks do not offer help for interdependent problems"
3) "Handbooks do not tell us when to use a dash rather than a semicolon"
QD 3- Raising is when you want your punctuation to stand out and lowering is when you want it to be subtle.
QD 5- I now know that there are different levels when it comes to punctuation.
QD 6- I usually think that punctuation is very important but now that I read Dawkins article it makes me think that it isn't as important.
MM- What we gain from reading this is that punctuation is rhetorical and that we can apply it to our writing immediately.
